Real Estate
This is a very important property tax advantage for owner/occupants of residential single family real estate.
If you have closed on the purchase of your home in 2007, you are eligible for the exemption effective with
the 2008 tax year. There is no charge for filing and you only have to do it once-it renews each year after
that. Please go to the office of the Board of Assessors on the 5th floor of the Chatham County Courthouse
on Montgomery Street. You will need your driver's license and a utility bill that shows you are residing
in the property. For more information, please see the Assessors website at www.chathamcounty.org/assessor.html
under the sub heading of "Facts every Taxpayer Should Know."
If at any time you change the ownership of your property, even between spouses, please see legal counsel to
avoid an inadvertent loss of the homestead exemption.

Wills
Why is it important to have a Last Will and Testament?
Most people spend the majority of their lives earning a livelihood, and hopefully accumulating assets that are to be inherited by their family. Unfortunately, many people do not take the necessary time and effort to properly plan for the transfer of their assets upon their death, and if a person dies without a Will, state law mandates the persons that are to receive the net assets of the decedent. In many instances where there is no Will, the beneficiaries are people who would not be selected by the decedent to inherit assets. With this in mind, it is extremely important in the complicated world in which we live to have a properly prepared Last Will and Testament which sets forth the orderly transfer of a person's assets upon death and the person or persons to receive them. It is far more expensive and time consuming to administer an estate when a person dies without a Will, as compared to when a person dies with a valid Last Will and Testament. This is particularly true where someone has been married more than once and there are children from a previous marriage.
For all of the above reasons, it is prudent to take the time to have a qualified attorney assist in implementing the orderly transfer of assets upon a person's death which can best be accomplished by preparing a Last Will and Testament.

Automobile Injury
WHAT TO DO BEFORE AND AFTER AN AUTOMOBILE COLLISION
The vast majority of people live their entire life without being involved in an automobile collision
("collision" and "accident" may be used interchangeably throughout this article). However, everyone
should know what steps to take, both before and immediately following a collision to protect the life,
limb, property and legal rights of those involved. Doing the right thing, in the right way, and at the
right time can help protect the people involved, both legally and health wise, and will sometimes avoid
potential legal problems. Here are some steps to take if you are involved in an automobile collision
with another vehicle or pedestrian. Please note that some of these suggestions need to be implemented
as soon as you are able to implement them and whether or not you are ever involved in an automobile collision.
